Brentwood EELS 80 Bedford Tigers 4 (East of England Division 1) 2nd August 2014 By Anthony Sherwood

Bedford Tigers getting stuck in traffic delayed the days proceeding’s with kick off being delayed an hour. Eels had a healthy squad for this home game and were confident going into the fixture. With Brentwood’s forwards starting strongly including Dean McFarlane the tigers outfit was shook, which resulted in seasons Top Point Score Charlie Chambers started the game of with the opening try 5 minutes in and later converting. Resilient pressure from the kick off and strong carrying got the eels down the field again with Talisman Alfie Hill playing hooker today sneaked in after the play of the ball. With Bedford’s defense improving down the middle, Eels were forced to go wide with Mike Hogan strong running dotting down in the corner.

This leaving the score 16-0 after 20 minutes the Slippery Customers changed the forward pack around and physicality was raised with the Brentwood forwards battling down field only for Man of the match Alfie Hill to dot down for his second of the game. There was lack luster 10 minutes with Eels players eager to getting on the ball and sometimes taking each other out! This was brought back to reality with a superb set of 6 and a pre-planned kick from chambers on the 5th tackle to a flying Preye Khonga who seemed to leap above 3 players to dot down in the corner. The forwards feeling slightly left out held on to the ball a little longer and worked well in support play with Josh Woodcock fending of two defenders before finishing from 40 meters out. Damore Balgoun was next on the score line who was rewarded for some strong work in defense. Eels 2014 Top Try Scorer Callum Whitcombe, 17, dotted down before half time leaving the Eels up 46-0.

Coach Sherwood demanding more support play and mixing players around in different positions to practice training ground moves led to a slower start. Eels were to take the tally above 50 with Steve Kerslake, supporting Stand out Fullback Caleb Adetona who was next to cap of a well worked move from 40 meters touching down under the posts. With 30 minutes left Brentwood switched off for the first time in the game and Bedford who didn’t seem to give up throughout the game capitalized with their only score of the game under the posts from the play of the ball.

The last 20 saw the return of the starting lineup and coach Sherwood in at prop. This led to a four try flurry with Preye Khonga, Callum Whitcombe and Charlie Chambers capping off great games with well worked team try. The last score come from lose play with brentwood keeping the ball alive from well in their own half and Caleb Adetona finished the moved with an offload to Anthony Sherwood.

Celebrations were on with Brentwood Celebrating their first season undefeated in the domestic league and the first cup final. Eels were very thanksful as a whole to brentwood Rugby Club fohosting them throughout the year in Particular bar staff, Peter Watson and Grounds men Steve!

As well as Brentwood Eels Chairman Carl Horsman for a lot of the background work in helping the Eels Open Side flourish into what it has become. Brentwood have a bye into the Grand Final so are not back in action on the 16th August Venue and opposition to be confirmed after the other league playoffs on the 9th August.
