With Eels winning the team’s first encounter earlier in the season 40-12, Knew the away fixture would be a tough one. With Brentwood starting well the sides for the first 20 Minutes were well drawn. Eels drew first blood with Callum Whitcombe capitalizing on his move to Centre. Shortly after a high ball was stuck up over the Lions try line which the returning Mike Hogan dotted down. This had awoken the lions in which they pounced on two defensive mishaps after Second Rower Stewart Smith left the field with a serious Shoulder injury.
Eels hit back with Preye Khonga and Callum Whitecombe finishing off powerful runs from forwards Calvin Bradley and Clinton Dorling. Leaving the Half time Score 10-22 to eels! Early into the first half Eels were stomping the authority on the game with great physicality which resulted in Cambridge Lions captain lashing out at winger Simon wood, This only fired up the visiting Eels who added a three try’s in quick concession from Callum Whitcombe, Mike Hogan, and half back Charlie Chambers who’s game management is getting better with every game.
The flurry of tries brought the score to 10-40 to the eels, and as present in the home fixture a lapse of concentration from a kickoff let the Lions in for a soft try. Brentwood went on the attack immediately with Man of the match Callum Whitcombe dotting down for his fourth try of the game and 10th of the season. The game entered the last ten minutes with the heat getting to everyone including the referee after a Cambridge attacking set awarded a try that was clearly knocked on over the line, with brentwood feeling hard done by. Last play was called from the ref from a scrum deep into the Eels half Coach Sherwood insisted on one last try, to make up for the defensive frailties early on in the game and in true Slippery Customer fashion the ball was kept alive in the eels own half for nearly a minute after losing possession lions aimed for a cross field kick which Preye Khonga collected to go and beat Three defenders off load to new boy Laurie Dobbin and then offload to the ever enthusiastic David Animashaun to complete a terrific team try.
Brentwood Travel to North Herts Knights next week which is there last away game back in action on the 2nd August at Home Against Bedford Tigers. Both Kick offs 2:30pm
