Brentwood EELS 40 Cambridge Lions 12 (East Division 1) 7th June 2014 By Anthony Sherwood

Brentwood show great attitude to bounce back from last week’s heavy cup defeat with a complete performance against league contenders Cambridge lions. A Great start was needed and was provided with defensive drills & moves worked on in training being implemented the Eels got off to a great start. A well worked backs move led to Jon Wylie scoring in the corner which followed a missed conversion Lawrence Haywood’s only missed attempt of the game.

Mike Hogan who was close run for man of the match proving his worth on the wing as a constant threat with ball in hand and turning defense into attack with some great takes from high balls one of which leading to a 50m break with great support from Haywood eventually offloading back to Hogan to score. Another pre determine backs move see Preye Kongha dot over for his first score of the game.

A great defensive set working out from their own try line Brentwood put great out a great chase from a kick from Charlie Chambers who led the chase along with James Vogel and Jo Jones, Jones applied great pressure on the carrier with the ball fumbling only to be picked up and ran in beside the post by Youngster Vogel. This leaving the half time score 22-0.

With possession almost 50/50 and great defense stopping the visiting side from scoring in the first half, a basic approach was need at the start of the half. Overconfidence, took over for its 1st of 2 appearances in the game for eels. Turn over ball was granted to lions that later scored and converted, bringing the score line to 22-6. This appeared to wake up the Brentwood team who then controlled the rest of the game with Haywood replacing Chambers to merely go back to training plays a strong set of six and great pressure on the Cambridge lion from Calvin Bradley proved too much for 3 Lions defenders who went over to score.

A great set play put in Mike Hogan’s second try of the game working well with Jon Wylie at Centre. This made the score 34-6, Brentwood started pushing for more points and after receiving a big hit Callum Whitcombe at full back dusted himself off along with 4 or 5 defenders to score under the posts for Brentwood’s last score of the game. Two handling errors in the closing embers of the game created an opportunity for lions to have the last word of the game, which the took with opens arms and carefully converted bringing the final score to 40-12.

This result leaving Brentwood Eels Top of the league with. With the first away game around the corner at bottom placed Bedford Tigers this weekend Saturday 14th June another test in its self. Brentwood Also drew league above Southend Spartans in the Semi-Final of the shield should be played at Southend on the 21st June!
