Brentwood EELS 34 St Alban's Centurions 12 (EAST RL Premier) 23rd July 2016

The Previous encounter between these sides left Eels feeling hard beat, but the second leg was again there for the taking. Eels Talisman and Half Back Charlie Chambers was out this week and Lawrence Haywood stepped up to the plate to run the show. Overall there were six changes from the Cup Final win over the Crusaders the previous week with coach Sherwood setting up his side to maintain a high paced game the weather suited the scene with temperatures scorching!

Eels started the game sloppy after a good warm up this was surprising and it was not long before a slight bit of frustration kicked in. Dissent from Callum Whitcombe was the first of five penalties the Eels were to concede within ten minutes of kick off. St Alban's having a lot of the Possession but the Eels defence was solid until a sneak from the play of the ball out wide and the centurions opened the scoring but missed the conversion 0-4. Eels were struggling to get out of gear in attack and trying to much to early on and gifting the ball to centurions in key areas but the much improved defence over the last few weeks held out again. A lose ball led to a centurions player dropping on the ball along with Cameron Furlong ensuring the player stayed down. The referee deemed this a cynical offence and Captain for the day was off for Ten minutes. St Albans made the most of another penalty kick to position themselves up for a carbon copy of the first try but with an offload out of the tackle to the winger to score in the corner from the play of the ball. Another missed conversion meant the scores were 0-8 with twenty minutes of the half to play. The Eels snapped back into and a forced knock in their own half, which meant they had the ball back. It only took two tackles for the eels to breakthrough the Centurions defence through Callum Whitcombe under the posts which Lawrence Haywood Converted 6-8. The Eels now back to full strength with their captain back on the field looked to start to take control of the game and a great break from centre Mike Hogan ended badly with a tackle and flying arm ending the stand out players game and possible season with a dislocated shoulder. With James Vogel slotting into centre the eels still had some valuable resources out wide and it was not long before they doubled their score along with the scorers tally it was Callum Whitcombe over again just before half time leaving the scores 12-8 after another successful conversion Haywood.

With the Half time break a let of for centurions with Preye Kongha getting stop 20m after a great 50m break from Jake Yellop. Coach Sherwood was keen for his players to pick up the pace and work the offloads within the forward carries. The eels come out firing and took to field and the game to centurions and was not long before Debut-ant Haidyn Lloyd crashed over for his first try for the club Haywood again successful with the boot stretching the scores to 18-8. The eels really picked up the pace and were finding holes and offloads through St Alban's who looked to have no answer to Jacob King's magic sidestepping and Preye Kongha pace and power. Solid Carries from Simon Wood and Damore Balogun put the eels in striking distance. Another great line from James Vogel who was found by Half back Joe Heavey led to the eels being on the try line. Quick thinking between Hooker Harry Chambers and Captain Cameron Furlong led to the the captain making the most of a superb offload to crash over in between the markers untouched, extending the score with another successful Conversion from Lawrence Haywood to 24-8. The game was getting a bit feisty and the eels players were feeling the niggles from the centurions players and frustration that the referee was not noticing them, led to Possession being handed to the centurions in the second half in the form of a soft penalty at the play of the ball to which eels shut the door on with some ferocious defence from the eels forwards. A repeat set from a penalty for an offside was their downfall and it was not long before centurions were over in the corner again for their third combination of Penalty, Try from the play of the ball. Another missed conversion led to the score being 24-12. The eels finding themselves in a similar position to the away leg finding it hard to complete their sets by either breaking through poor defence or making slight errors in the final stages of scoring. Lawrence Haywood and Joe Heavey settled the game after retaining position and got structure for the first time in the game, this led to Lawrence Walking over the line untouched. Unable to convert his own try the scores were 28-12. The last ten minutes were all eels with Tom Scarsbrook and Alex Wright stepping up the defence and forcing a knock on. A scrum in the eels own half led to another try with simple hands out to the wing for Callum Whitcombe to make up for his earlier penalty count and seal the victory with a hat trick. Haywood proving he only converted other players tries added the extras leaving the full time score 34-12.

Coaches verdict was "The Boys were confident we could beat them after the game at their place we were missing a bit of muscle on the day to get us into the right positions but today we wasn't and with the Injury to Hogan on most of the boys it was never in doubt once we took the lead. He will be a big miss. We were missing our main half back Charlie today which is maybe why we did not complete as many sets but we got the job done and that is all down to the culture we have we are getting to a good place and we have nothing to lose in the next two weeks"

This being the last Home game for eels have unexpectedly put their hand in the mix for the playoffs. With very tough away games ahead the next two weeks (Hemel Stags 30th July and Bedford Tigers 6th August),
