Brentwood EELS 48 Cambridge Lions 28 (East RL Division 1) 1st August 2015

Aware if they won this game Eels would stay top and get a bye into the grand finale it was all to play for. Eels electing to give a few players game time with a risk as they might miss the cohesion that has got them this far it was a risk but it made for a great first half. With new composed and powerful look Cambridge making the most of an early penalty and going over in the corner. The Lions continued to attack with power and precision which the eel’s players were struggling to match.

A two try brace from later voted Man of the Match Simon Wood, Meant Brentwood were back in the game. The latter of the two was after repetitive pressure from Cambridge and pressure on the half back forced a miss pass straight into Simon Wood’s hands for him to outpace the defense and touch down under the posts. With the referee penalizing the eels at every opportunity it seemed the penalty count was easily into double figures and Cambridge lions were a new side with new found confidence and taking the chances eels provided with 25 minutes gone the eels were down 10-20. A few changes were made in the pack and following breaks by James Vogel and Damore Balgourn left Ashley Somers to stroll through an unwound defense. Lions immediately replying after another penalty kick to gain advantage left the half time score 14-24.

With division 1 title bid being threatened Coach Sherwood was forced to make changes at half time which took immediate effect with Dean McFarlane setting off like a freight train through Cambridge’s defense the lions were rattled. Successive tries from Damore Balgourn, Ashley Somers and young fullback Jacob King meant the eels took the lead for the first time in the game with the score 28-24. A moment of madness and another penalty the last of the game for eels was to blame for Lions last word of the game with the games tied with 20 minutes to go it made for a great finish which the eels ravished in scoring some sublime team tries. With Slick hands from Callum Whitcombe Slotting in Mike Hogan who doubled his tally within minutes with a powerful run. With Man of Steel Chambers having an off day with the boot the score was 36-28. With the eels looking to keep the pace in the game they swapped in some forwards who had immediate effect with Ben Smith Sniping over at the play of the ball and Tom Richie getting back to form by cutting a great line powered over to conclude the scoring after a successful kick from chambers at 48-28. Meaning Brentwood had won division 1 for the second year running and had a bye into this year’s Grand Final on August 22nd.

Overall Sherwood was happy with the performance “Cambridge caught us out we was trying some new things out and players for the grand final and they made a meal out of us were we wasn’t as fine-tuned as our starting 13 had been. I think our the reason why we ended up on top is having a good consistent core of players playing every game and opposition we have come up against have struggled to do that but having said that people will be coming out of the woodwork to play in the grand final so we wish best of luck to both teams and look forward to defending our title.”
