Brentwood Eels were edged out 26-20 in a spirited display against a composed Chargers outfit, showing fight and flair but ultimately falling short in key moments.
In a physical and end-to-end contest, the Eels battled hard throughout and were well in the game right to the final minutes. However, a combination of ill-discipline and a string of unforced errors handed momentum back to the Chargers, who used their experience to manage the game and hold onto the lead.
The Eels were also dealt a blow before and during the match, losing new recruit Jasper McLachlan at hooker and young gun fullback at halftime. That meant further opportunities for younger players to step up, with Jack Harvey impressing at hooker and Aaron Corbett slotting in at fullback on his return from Ireland duty.
Despite the result, the performance was full of positives, with the squad continuing to gel and younger players showing great promise under pressure. With lessons learned and plenty of encouraging signs, the Eels will be looking to bounce back quickly.
Next up: we host Eastern Rhinos at Old Brentwoods in a much-anticipated all-Essex clash 19th July 2:30 KO.
