Brentwood Eels 16-46 London Chargers

The second half of the season kicks off like the first with defeat to London Chargers. However, two young Eels made their SCL Debut and the other grabbing their Heritage number, after strong performance in our A side recently!

#142 Xavier Medeiros
#155 Luke Everett

Even though there was much changed side due to injuries and suspensions. A spirited and youthful outing can only help the experience of this young squad but ultimately Chargers sharpness was the difference again capitalizing on some unforced errors.

The First half look to start well with Eels completing their first two sets and forcing an error on chargers second. However, the Scrum play was our worst enemy again this week with another unforced error gifting chargers a full set 10m out from our line to open the scoring. Shortly after the Eels clicked into gear with Second Rower Ollie Strange stepping in at half back for the day put a great ball out to 17 yr old Zak McClenaghan grabbed his first try for the club. It wasn't long before another error gifted chargers prime ball not far from our line to stretch the lead 6-18 to the visitors, a lapse in concentration just before the break left the Eels down 30-6 in what seemed to be a long day that didn't reflect the game.

In the first 20 minutes of the second half which was the only part of the game the eels controlled due to completing all of their sets. We scored two successive tries with Xavier Medeiros who made a key break that kicked off a great team try influenced by young George Harkins distribution and support play from an exit set finished off strongly by Scott Whitby. Then fellow debutant Luke Everitt scored a well worked try again as the Chargers defense looked frustrated this followed up with a second yellow card for their #9. The last 20 minutes the errors kicked in again and the Eels left three clear chances out there with young Zak unable to take a crossfield kick to secure his double. This led to another lapse of concentration with the game gone and Chargers adding two more converted tries to chalk of another similar scoreline in this fixture.

The Eels look forward to hosting Essex Rivals Eastern Rhinos 8th July before heading on the road again to bottom of the table Bedford Tigers 15th July.
