Brentwood EELS 44 St Ives Roosters 20 (East RL Cup) 30th May 2015

This time last year EELS come second best to a premier side North Herts Crusaders, The main aim of this season was to test ourselves again, especially against premier outfits at any opportunity. With a few players still injured from union season or finishing of exams at University’s the eels squad depth was pushed to the limits even with broncos Academy players Tom Scarsbrook and Callum Whitcombe back in the fold.

EELs started strongly and there was a great arm wrestle with at least 6 or 7 complete sets between the sides before gap opened up for Callum Whitcombe to score the first points of the 2015 campaign converted by the elder Chambers brother Charlie. Tom Scarsbrook who made a clean break ended up injuring his knee beating the last defender and was rushed to hospital. The stoppage was a shock to everyone and eels come out of the break stronger in pursuit of just deserves for a fallen player with Charlie chambers dotting down after great pressure built with some superb team moves.

Roosters Showing they was not undefeated in the premier this season for no reason there fullback showing some footwork to catch out a dog leg defense and was successfully converted, this was St Ives last word of the half. There was not a clear momentum with either team as of yet until just before half time when eels superb defense of their own line and a quick complete set got them up the field with Simon wood capping of a spectacular try beating three defenders in the process, again converted successfully by chambers. Half time EELS 16 – 6 St Ives Roosters

With the first half pretty much a slogging match coach Sherwood urged his players to pick the pace and physically of the game up at every opportunity and they dually did with three try’s in quick procession Younger brother chambers darting run ended up under the posts, Simon Woods second try of the game and easily contender for try of the season a cross field kick from chambers that went through two oppositions players hands before wood got his fingertips to it and dotted it down before running out of play. The last of the trio was great sniping play but Ben Smith at hooker keeping the angle of the attack wide open. St Ives responded but EELS were surprisingly in control half way through the second half with the score now 32-12.

The last twenty minutes was hard for both teams with a slight over confidence coming in from the eels and niggles from the opposition and the players exhausted from a hard felt game both teams shared the spoils with two try’s a piece only difference chambers converted both scores. The first from superbly executed training ground moves Josh Woodcock going over with defenders hanging of him. And not to forget a solo effort from 2014 Man of steel Callum whitcombe who opened up a tired roosters defense from deep in his own half to score under the posts.

Some close run ins for man of the match in games like this everyone has to step up and they did with notable performances from Whitcombe, Wood and most of the forwards the dog work of the day was notebaly done by Harry Chambers who justly won man of the match in a historic game for the eels with the first win over a premier side. This result meaning Brentwood EELS push on to the Semi Final of the cup which is due to be played on the 20th June and draw will be late next week. With priorities back to the league this Training Thursday at the Brentwood Centre ready for Saturday away at Cambridge Lions 6th June.
