Brentwood EELS 12 Kings Lynn Black Knights (East of England Shield Final)

With the team missing both starting props Josh Woodcock and Calvin Bradley the average weight of the team dropped dramatically on a day it was needed, Captain Alfie Hill and Half back Joe Heavey were also unavailable so Chris Suker was captain. Prolific Scorers Preye Khonga and Mike Hogan were away also so back 3 was changes dramtially. With these changes made Brentwood were taking in the day at Hemel Stags Stadium and there first ever final!

Chris Suker proving why coach Sherwood named him as captain with the first hit of the game dislodging the ball deep in the black Knights half. Great defense meant Brentwood coming away with no points and the first score to come from Black Knights who built up pressure with 3 or 4 complete sets due to early penalties conceded by eels with the half back dotting under the posts.

This was a start to the Black Knights unleashing the forwards power and soon after taking the lead a multiple of tries were scored leaving them 18-0 up 15 minutes in brentwood going back to basics as they wasted a few opportunities early on showed what they were capable of with an immaculate set of 6 and chambers going under the posts to score Lawrence Haywood missing the conversion bringing it 18-4. This swing in momentum led to Coach Anthony Sherwood coming on and switch the balance of play with a great carry from Callum Whitcombe Sherwood followed up crashing over for his first try for the club. From the kick off Sherwood was handed the ball again who crashed through a few defenders to offload a lucky flick pass to Callum Whitcombe who rooted under the posts for Brentwood’s third and final score leaving it 18-12 just before half time.

The Second half was controlled by Kings Lynn Black Knights with their Ex Professional Talisman Reggie Dunn given a free roam of the pitch from the Eels side. This sealed victory for the Norfolk based side which slowly dotted up to the score of 60-12. Coach Sherwood said “I was extremely happy that the boys got to the final but due to my competitive nature it’s never nice to lose! So hopefully we will prove to ourselves immediately in the league what we can do and in the future performing more consistently against premiership sides as we are taking experience away everytime we play them”

Eels are back in action away at league competitors Cambridge Lions this weekend 2:30pm KO.
