Southend Spartans 20 Brentwood EELS 44 (East of England Shield Semi-Final)

Brentwood Bringing confidences from their league form were optimistic of the challenge against league above side Spartans. Brentwood Started with physicality from the off with a great team defensive set, Brentwood were fired up and two massive carry’s from both Props Calvin Bradley and Josh woodcock, Josh powered through for Brentwood’s and the game’s first score. This then brought tighter play from both sets of teams with final balls not going to hand due to defensive pressure from both sides. With Southend scoring twice to take the lead but missing both conversions leaving the score 8-6.

This Urged Brentwood to go back to basics and play the full set of tackles and put the pressure back on quick thinking and great running by Captain Alfie Hill, secured Debutant Steve Kerslake a try for cutting a superb line bringing the half time score to 12- 8.

Calvin Bradley led the aggression and physicality in the second half and was rewarded with a great try, shortly after leaving the field after a head clash with a Spartans player. This led to a long break and stalling Brentwood’s progress. Southend took full advantage proving their premiership qualities capping of a great team score and future pressure from a kick left full back Callum Whitcombe being caught out by the typical bounce of a rugby ball, this turning the game around with Southend taking the lead for the second and last time of the game 20-16.

Brentwood got back into the game and into possession after great Defense from Joe Heavey. Charlie Chambers and Alex brindle picking up the speed of the game led to Brindle laying off a delayed pass for debutant Kerslake to dot down for his second! With replacement prop Damory Balgoun and Josh woodcock leading the attack Creating wholes the Southends Defense Chambers created another gap and threw a no look flick pass to supporting runner and Man of the Match Steve kerslake to dot down under the posts for his hatrick!

The Floodgates open along with Player Coach Anthony Sherwood entering the fold for Josh Woodcock with Three tries being scored in quick succession from a great carry from Sherwood offloading to Simon wood to score in the corner for the first. From the kick off Brentwood built up great pressure with everyone wanting the hands on the ball but eventually worked its way out to Brentwood’s top Try scorer so far Preye Khonga. Jake Yellop closing the scoring from another great team worked try.

Eels in to their first Cup final in the first season! Will face Kings Lynn Black Knights @ Hemel Stags on the 12th July KO to be confirmed. Brentwood are next in action in the league on july 5th away at North Herts Crusaders!
