Brentwood EELS 6 North Herts Crusaders 56 (East Challenge Cup) 31st May 2014 By Anthony Sherwood

Brentwood Eels had their first lesson in rugby league in only their second competitive game. With a try form back rower Jo Jones who seemed to have it all in this game being sin binned in the second half also, Lawrence Haywood Converting. The Eels Started strong testing the knowledgeable opponents but due to constant infringements by Eels the game was heavily put in favor of the visitors.

With North Herts Crusaders 3 years running East Premier champs and previous winners of the East Challenge Cup, Brentwood were in for a massive test and starting strongly Brentwood proving they can match physicality come close to opening the scoring but North Herts proved their worth immediately with an immaculate set of 6 six to score with a kick with a dubious touch down but worth it for the run of play. A mistake from kick off left the visitors with an easy chance to score again after some great defense in spots but execution again from exploiting the slow markers.

The Referee was not as forgiving around the tackle area and penalized Brentwood with from 15 minutes which killed the competitiveness in the game with crusaders rarely making yards through their own set plays but through penalties, a brief attack from Brentwood without led to Jo Jones going over with a conversion from Lawrence Haywood Half Time 22-6.

Second half with crusaders starting similarly to the first half with two great scores almost confirming the result, the referee sin binned try scorer Jo Jones for repetitive penalties from Brentwood. Frustrations were then at the maximum for Brentwood with decisions going against them and now a man down against a well drilled side. Coach Sherwood Decided to make a few changes so the whole squad of 20 got a feel for the game of rugby league against a well drilled opposition. Which led to Crusaders cruising to an end result of 56-6.

This result leaving the Brentwood Out of the challenge cup but entered into the shield. With priorities back to the league this Saturday against Cambridge Lions 7th June @Brentwood Rugby club 2:30pm KO.
