Due to the number of matches planned for the day and issues with timings this match was played on our training pitch. As there were no posts both kickers were able to put their kicking boots aside and concentrate on running rugby. With the Eels having more lads than expected we were able to loan the Spartans a couple of players to make up the numbers and cover for any injuries. At the outset the players were told to concentrate on their defence - particularly their line-speed and not play one out rugby but look to pass and keep the ball alive. From the whistle this is how the boys played, with the forwards making good metres and combining well with the backs. Petrie, Davidson, Duffy, Davies and Douglas (playing in the forwards) did exceptionally well. Dan "the Poacher" Fox was great around the ruck area and Horsman jinking and throwing out some long passes at stand-off boosted his try assists for the season. Owen Dew was his usual self with great defence and tough running, Ford put in some lovely tackles and Richardson along with Orchard got over for two tries apiece. Hooker for the day Tom Madaglia did a great job and new boys Henry Trew (scoring his first try for the club) and Ryan Whitcombe really impressed.
As always it was a team performance and this has been something we have worked on all year - we have no divas in this side!
Credit to the Spartans who are relatively new to the sport but never gave up. They really showed great character and will come good.
Tries:
Dew 3, Douglas 3, Richardson 2, Orchard 2, Trew 1, Mullen 1, Outen 1
